Look at Rico’s bright eyes and healthy feathers. When I got him he was living in a garage on a diet of seeds…sunflower and safflower for the most part. The owners were very nice people; they believed that this diet was all that was needed. We may not know what these birds get in the wild that keeps them healthy, but I do know they need their diet to be supplemented with a variety of fresh foods. There are some great websites out there on how to cook for your parrots. I will soon create a simple visual list of food here showing what my cockatoos love and what each food provides. I add red palm oil and virgin coconut oil to the diet as well. Rico gets his in his “oatmeal” in the morning. By the way each cockatoo has a different set of likes and dislikes, so experimentation is the key.
For Rico my 24yr old please can u tell me the amount do I use of the red palm & coconut oils is this once a day & how or what do u mix this with thank you Lisa Banerjee oh I for got to say if is amount of size of the parrot RIco is a goffin cockatoo
Hi Lisa! There are two ways to do this…my birds eat coconut oil (slightly chilled to maintain its shape) every other day…1/2 teaspoon of coconut oil just set out on top of their seed. The palm oil (it stains, so be careful) is mixed into Rico’s oatmeal – a scant 1/8 teaspoon or so per meal. He won’t eat it plain/straight from the bottle (although my macaws do!) — I think because it has a strong smell.
